About Mitchell Doughty, PhD

Mitchell Doughty, PhD is a Research Engineer at Intuitive and is passionate about extended reality (XR) technology, machine learning, and healthcare. At Intuitive, Mitchell is a member of the Future Forward research team and contributes to the design and implementation of XR technologies to support intraoperative surgical activities and improve patient outcomes. Before relocating to the Bay Area and joining Intuitive full-time, he completed two internships with Intuitive and worked on several telepresence related projects involving XR head-mounted displays.

Mitchell spent his PhD at the University of Toronto investigating the use of AR head-mounted displays to improve the accuracy and speed of targeted cardiac procedures. His main contributions were into the assessment of perceptual accuracy of virtual content, investigation of marker-less tool tracking for augmented surgical guidance, and exploration of context-relevant virtual content presentation for intelligent surgical guidance.
