About Eugene Chung, MD, MPH, FACC
Eugene H Chung joined Michigan Medicine in September 2017 to direct the expansion of the cardiac electrophysiology (EP) service in West Michigan and to start the Michigan Medicine Sports Cardiology Clinic.
Dr. Chung was born in Lansing, Michigan, and graduated from East Lansing High School. After attending Harvard College, he earned an MSc at the University of Edinburgh (Scotland) and his MD at Jefferson Medical College (Philadelphia). He is currently working toward his MPH in Population and Health Sciences at the UM School of Public Health. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and fellowships in both Cardiovascular Disease and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Massachusetts. While on faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC) from 2008-2017, his practice encompassed the entire range of EP procedures with a focus on complex ablation of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. As Director of the West Michigan EP program, he is overseeing the launch of three new EP services. Most recently, he was appointed Associate Medical Director, Cardiovascular Network of West Michigan, a collaborative effort to continue the growth of cardiovascular care options in the west side of the state.
Dr. Chung also has a long-standing interest in arrhythmias in athletes: his clinical research centered on ECG assessment of athletes. Over the years, Dr. Chung’s sports cardiology practice has expanded to the cardiovascular care of recreational and competitive athletes of all ages. In addition to his current role as Team Cardiologist for UM Athletics, he is the cardiology consultant for several universities and professional teams around Michigan. He is also the 2020-23 Chair of the American College of Cardiology Sports and Exercise Leadership Council.
