About Adrian Elliott, PhD

A/Prof Elliott is a nationally and internationally recognised leader in the field of cardiac arrhythmias. A/Prof Elliott is a senior investigator within the Centre for Heart Rhythm Disorders and leads a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, exercise physiologists and health scientists . A/Prof Elliott has defined the role of physical inactivity as a risk factor for cardiac arrhythmias, and has led high-impact clinical studies that defined the role of exercise training to the management of patients with symptomatic AF. More recently, A/Prof Elliott has co-led the work that identified the presence of subclinical heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) amongst patients with arrhythmias, using a novel combination of invasive haemodynamic, electrophysiological and imaging parameters. This work has led to new trials to assess novel treatment poathways to alleviate the symptoms associated with AF.

A/Prof Elliott also leads a number of studies quantifying the mechanisms promoting arrhythmias in endurance athletes. He is the South Australian lead for the Pro@Heart study, a prospective, international study of current and former elite endurance athletes that has shed new light on the cardiac remodelling and development of arrhythmias in this cohort. He is the principal investigator of the upcoming FEMME-HEART study and is an international co-investigator for the NEXAF detraining study to assess training modification as a method to treat arrhythmias in endurance athletes. A/Prof Elliott leads an outstanding team of PhD students, cardiac technicians and postdoctoral researchers within the Centre for Heart Rhythm Disorders. He has received >$8m in competitive grant finding over the past 5 years, has been invited to deliver talks (>30) at numerous national and international conferences. He is the principal investigator of the multicentre RCT’s EXIT-AF, PACE-UP and AF-FIT and a senior investigator on mumerous clinical trials including PREDICT-STROKE and REDUCE-AF.A/Prof Elliott holds a continuing academic appointment in the College of Health at Adelaide University and is a member of the Lifelong Health Executive at the South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). A/Prof Elliott also holds accreditation as a clinical accredited exercise physiologist (ESSA).
