About Ian Woollett, MD, FHRS

Ian Woollett, MD, FHRS, is a cardiac electrophysiologist and Director of the Electrophysiology Laboratory at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a US News top-50 cardiology program. He trained in cardiology at Yale and in electrophysiology at Columbia, and over two decades in practice has served as principal investigator on many of the first-in-class ablation and left atrial appendage occlusion technologies to reach the field, from laser balloon and cryoballoon pulmonary vein isolation to pulsed field ablation and the Watchman and Amulet devices. He has served in hospital medical staff governance as President of the Medical Staff and Chair of the Credentials Committee. He developed and published the first feasibility study to use real-time three-dimensional transesophageal echocardiography as the primary intraprocedural imaging modality for atrial fibrillation ablation, an approach that eliminates intracardiac echo and fundamentally changes the cost structure of the procedure.
