About Naoki Tomii, PhD
Naoki Tomii, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology (RCAST), The University of Tokyo, specializing in biomedical engineering, biomedical precision engineering, and computational approaches to medicine.
Dr. Tomii’s research focuses on developing advanced technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease, particularly cardiac arrhythmias. His work combines electrocardiographic analysis, artificial intelligence, machine learning, mathematical modeling, and cardiac simulation to develop tools capable of interpreting complex biological signals and supporting clinical decision-making. His cardiovascular research includes the development of ECG-based excitation and membrane potential imaging technologies for the diagnosis and treatment of arrhythmias, including non-paroxysmal atrial fibrillation.
Beyond cardiac electrophysiology, Dr. Tomii’s research encompasses flexible ultrasound imaging and surgical-assist robotics, with an overarching goal of combining biomedical measurement and information engineering to create technologies that improve diagnosis and treatment while reducing burdens on patients and healthcare professionals.
Dr. Tomii earned his PhD in Bioengineering from The University of Tokyo in 2017. Prior to his academic career, he worked in technical development at Omron Corporation. He subsequently held academic appointments within the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Medicine and School of Engineering before becoming an Associate Professor and joining RCAST.
