Ensuring Techquity in Healthcare Innovation and Implementation: Challenges & Opportunities

September 05, 2024 | 02:15 PM (EDT) - 03:00 PM (EDT)

There has been a rapid increase in technological advancements in the healthcare industry—such as telehealth, biometric monitoring technologies (BioMeTs) which includes wearables, and artificial intelligence (AI)/ Machine learning (ML). These technologies have already begun to transform biomedical research, with an increasing body of scientific evidence it will very likely transform how we provide healthcare, more specifically – cardiovascular care soon. However, there is growing concern that these technologies may inadvertently worsen existing health disparities by propagating biases inherent in existing data and clinical care processes.

This session is intended to cover:
– Key ethical concerns related to incorporation of digital technologies for cardiovascular care including systematic/algorithmic bias, privacy/data ownership, hallucinations with LLMs, accountability/autonomous systems, the digital divide, and governance
– Potential solutions: Diversity of teams and datasets, retrospective and prospective validation in diverse populations, implementation research, and context specific interventions.
